This Thursday, May 6th, INFARMED presided over a new meeting in the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which is taking place during the first half of this year. The initiative brought together about 90 participants from the Group of Heads of European Medicines Agencies (HMA).
The heads of the regulators discussed between themselves and with the heads of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) about the initiatives related to pandemic control and discussed measures to address the resource challenges.
Regarding the Pandemic, the discussion focused on the lessons learned in the last year, mainly regarding the expeditious procedures and transparency in communication with the public, to provide safe and quick answers to the expectations created in public opinion. The participants agreed about the deepening of coordination between the EMA and the national entities. They also discussed measures to be implemented to improve the production of reports on the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of undesirable effects of medicines.
The Group of Heads of European Medicines Agencies is composed by the group of National Competent Authorities, which are responsible for the regulation of medicines for human and veterinary use in the European Economic Area. The group provides a forum for the coordination and exchange of views and proposals on issues relating to the European regulatory system and the role of the national authorities therein. The HMA cooperates with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Commission (Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety - DG Santé).
Until June, INFARMED is responsible for the coordination of 20 meetings of the various Committees and Working Groups.
